Being a naturalized citizen of this country and having been raised in the urban setting of Chicago Heights has given Luis Sahagun the foundation for his art. Luis strives to deliver powerful messages that tell the story of the challenges of growing up in an underprivileged community and what it feels like to be a minority in today’s world.

His work is about being resourceful and spontaneous. Usually, urban materials such as street rubble are used to create sculptures/installations that embody a Do It Yourself aesthetic. Furthermore, the process is dictated by his hand tool selection, physical exhaustion and/or imposed restrictions. The outcome challenges the audience to reevaluate their preconceived notions of which materials are accepted as beautiful in art.

Luis graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial design and minors in Art History and Marketing.

He is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Northern Illinois University, where he teaches foundations classes, serves as president of Delta Psi Alpha a multi-cultural fraternity that fosters diversity in the community, and is a participant of the Graduate Arts Association. Read Less
