Mask & Bauble Dramatic Society’s winter show for its 160th season was Rebecca Feldman’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The musical was a satire on the spelling bee circuit—where kids are under constant pressure to overachieve and attain fame in perfection—as well as a commentary on the attitude society has on “manufacturing” the perfect child. It is filled with both whimsical childish chaos and great adult humor. The director, Beni El-Dalati, wanted to ensure that the show’s number one priority was to always entertain.
Pitch: Based off of the honeycomb structure, the proposed design wanted to be fun and entertaining while still being intellectually intriguing and fascinating to an older, college crowd. There are hints of raunchy humor hidden within the design, for those of us curious enough to hunt for them. The floorboard background evoked the “gymnatorium” set. The whole design wants to stay fun but also sophisticated.
