SCAD Vernissage Poster

This poster was designed for the SCAD Winter 2013 Student Exposition in Lacoste, France. I entered the poster as part of a contest and won! One-thousand copies of the poster were printed and posted in towns all over Provence. The design and illustration were heavily influenced by Hergé's The Adventures of Tintin.
I started with a few thumbnails. I was inspired by class French designs, such as "Chat Noir," "Journée du Poilu" and artwork by Van Gogh. I also drew inspiration from the village of Lacoste.
The thumbnails were narrowed down. I had hoped to do the spoof on "Chat Noir" but it was concluded that the slipping student would be the better approach. The goal was to draw in the locals, so I wanted to create something familiar to them. I looked to "Tintin" comics for stylistic inspiration.
To make the poster feel more authentic, I created the background and the typography with traditional materials (graphite and ink respectively).
