One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Penguin Book Cover Competition 2012
The Competition required me to simply make a book cover for "One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest".  Whilst looking at the content with the book I found many interesting themes, however the one that stood out was the theme of "confinement".  I found the story to be very enjoyable and how the goal from the very start had been to break out of the institution.  It was when I was looking at the measurements of the cover that I had the idea, to have someone break out of the cover itself.

After exploring a few ideas, I came across what you see below, the idea of using a bookmark as a head.  In my mind I was trying to capture the iconic moment in the book where McMurphy is climbing over the fence, as I thought it would make for quite a visual dynamic.

I tried to lay the type of the titled in a chaotic way, without it being too messy.  This worked well in showing McMurphy's Character especially against the neat fence wire grid in the background which could be seen to represent Nurse Ratchet and the institution.
