The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design’s Graduation Catalogue serves as a flagship promotional piece for the school. Published annually, it contains examples of the work produced by each student of that year's graduating class. As the student selected to be the 2013 Catalogue Designer I was responsible for producing and cohesively implementing a unique design concept for the publication. My goal was to find a way to communicate the theme of graduation and growth in a way that spoke to people from many different creative disciplines, while remaining specific to the identity of NSCAD.

End of Year Collateral
An additional challenge of the grad catalogue project was extending my design concept into a wide variety of formats and situations. I created invitations, booklets and promotional pieces for the graduation ceremony, as well as invitations, vinyl signage and newspaper advertisements for the end of year graduate exhibition.

Concept Genesis
The concept for the design was generated as a solution to the following question:

How can a graphic theme communicate the experience of graduation in a way that is specific to art school
and to NSCAD?

Stairs are a powerful feature of NSCAD's architecture. The school's primary campus is famous for its many staircases, and their presence is something all graduates can strongly relate to. They also speak to ascension and dispersion, reflecting the exit of graduates from the school. I chose to hand draw the black-hatched overlay because drawing is an element of artistic creation and process that is shared by students in every discipline. This allows it to represent the collective artistic efforts of the school in a way that honours all disciplines equally.
