Alfalfa Studio collaborated with Nickelodeon to create an animation campaign celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The 2012 set of animated shorts celebrates three Hispanic Americans who reached the top of their fields: Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Sonia Sotomayor, astronaut Ellen Ochoa, and novelist Oscar Hijuelos.

With the script we received to work with, my role in this project, as the main designer for Ellen Ochoa’s spot, was to research and design the character, develop a storyboard, and create collage illustrations. For Sonia Sotomayor and Oscar Hijuelos, I participated in creating the artwork and preparing files for production.

The promotional campaign succeeded in capturing the imagination of Nickelodeon’s audience of six– to eleven-year-olds by dynamically communicating the writers’ lyrical scripts via concept, character and story. Along with playful collages, flat fields of orange hues were used throughout to emphasize the network’s branding.

The three spots engaged not only the Hispanic demographics, but attracted a more diverse crowd. The shorts aired on Nickelodeon from September 15 to October 15, 2012.
