A series documenting the states that have enacted legislation recognizing civil unions for same-sex couples.

    A Continuing Poster Series
  • In the spring of 2011, I finished in the top 8 of the 2011 Poster Clash Competition...with a poster I later realized was not exactly accurate. A civil union does not guarantee all rights experienced by married couples. In an attempt to rectify my misunderstanding of the issue, I've recreated the original poster and have continued to add to the poster as states pass new laws. 


  • The original happy poster.
  • In 2010, five states recognized and granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples
  • June 24, 2011: NY Governor Cuomo signs the Marriage Equality Act
    July 24, 2011: NY joins the happy states
  • Feburary 13, 2012: Governor Gregoire signs a bill to legalize same-sex marriage
    June 7, 2012: Washington will join the happy states
  • March 1, 2012: Governor O’Malley signs a bill to legalize same-sex marriage
    January 1, 2013: Maryland will join the happy states
