ARCHMEDIUM COMPETITION / Aurora Borealis Arctic Observatory, Rovaniemi, Finland
The concept is directly inspired by the dialoge with the context through the use of its shapes: a crowd of triangles that look like a conifer forest, and the front of the wooden roofs of the architecture in Rovaniemi.
The next step toward the integration was conceiving the room as it was a cut in the ground, lifted in its central point to obtain a rotated pyramid, with its top laying on the ground, resulting in green sides in summertime blending with the adjacent meadow.
Each room will be close to the main structure but, at the same time, scattered in the woods: as a consequence visitors will feel like being plunged in nature. An extreme loop to the northern lights is possible with an anchored hot-air balloon and a floating sensation in the wake.
All services are of easy access through a large open space with minimum divisions, all capped by the multitude of the triangular shapes of the ceiling, that forces the space perception through the wide windows to the outside forest and the town of Rovaniemi.
From Rovaniemi the skyline of the whole structure will appear as a broken line over the tree tops, especially during the long northern nights, becoming the town landmark.
Si è cercata l’ottimale integrazione con il delicato contesto attraverso l’uso della forma: una selva di triangoli come lo skyline di una foresta di conifere, ed il prospetto tipico dell’architettura di Rovaniemi.
Il successivo passo verso l’integrazione è stato di immaginare la camera d’albergo come un taglio nel terreno, sollevato nel punto centrale per ottenere una piramide ruotata col vertice inserito nel terreno: quindi coperture verdi (d’estate) in continuità col prato adiacente.
Anche il visitatore viene immerso nella natura, collocando le camere nelle vicinanze della struttura generale ma ciascuna è totalmente isolata nel bosco!
L’estremo salto nel cielo delle luci del nord sarà possibile usando una mongolfiera ancorata, per provare la sensazione di nuotare tra le scie.
All’interno del volume dei servizi vi è una fluida fruizione in uno spazio quasi totalmente libero, ma sovrastato dall’intricarsi delle coperture a falda (con pianta triangolare) tipo origami che comprime la percezione degli spazi verso le grandi aperture vetrate, sul bosco e su Rovaniemi.
Dalla cittadina sottostante sarà visibile soltanto lo skyline del complesso: una linea spigolosa tra le cime del bosco che, soprattutto nella più frequente vista notturna, potrebbe diventare il landmark cittadino.
