Hearth - 80h
Catalyst
Hearth is a game about contrast. The player always switches between two drastically different gameplays. One is a really light platformer with a lot of freedom and space for creativity, Haven. The other is a terribly oppressive first-person shooter, Acheron. The player starts in Haven and falls in Acheron everytime it misses a platform or it crumbles just as it is about to reach it. To go back to Haven the player must defeat the procedurally generated part of Acheron it fell into. The mechanic the player unlocks in Haven are mirrored in Acheron and used as weapons against enemies. The overall experience symbolizes the struggles of life and the fighting spirit of the human nature as well as the contrast between good and bad times.

Hearth was part of a competition where students were divided in small teams and every 2 weeks or so a game would be canned by teachers. The members of those teams would be reintegrated into the remaining teams. We made it to the last round but our game was to reliant on visual effects and few artists where potent in that regard.
