Architects can’t force people to connect, it can only plan the crossing points, remove barriers and make the meeting places useful and attractive."
– Denise Scott Brown

This project was for the demolition of the front facing building and replacing with new teaching space, library and staff office space. This offered the opportunity for a modernised front entrance, landscaping and identity.

The Existing Site

Initial exploration of the existing school shows a complex set of buildings, having been added to and extended many times over the years.

Overview of existing site: sun path, car parking and entrances.

Early Ideas

Many ideas were discussed as the brief evolved. This involved many meetings with the school, Local Authority, Contractor and design team.

The Winning Idea

The preference was for two separate extensions creating a landscaped path between them for the pupil entrance. This formed an outdoor courtyard near the hall pupils can use during lunch and break time as well as act as an outdoor classroom.
