Fairy Fae Week 2020 - Finnish Folklore

Fairy Fae Week - 2020
Creator
In Kalevala, the world was created when a diving duck made its nest on the knee of Ilmatar, the goddess of air. The duck layed six golden eggs and one of iron. The eggs fell and cracked open, creating the earth, skies, sun, moon, stars and the clouds.
False Donor
Will-o'-wisps, know in Finnish folklore as Virvatuli are fire-like creatures hovering above water or ground. They're said to be fairies or spirits, that lure people in harm's way.
Gossiping Animals
Similar to many cultures, foxes were considered to be cunning tricksters in Finnish folktales. As a kid I often listened to stories about a fox tricking other animals, usually bears, with lies and charisma.
Trickster
In Southern Finland, if things went missing it was sometimes blamed on creatures called Para. They were created by skilled witches, often into animalistic form, to aid them with stealing various things for their master.
Beauty
In Kalevala, the Northern Daughters are famed for their beauty. The ethereal beauties have no lack for suiters, but more often than not the men are denied of their hand.
Outcast
If a child was born disabled or deformed or changed so seemingly out of nowhere, it was thought to have been a changeling. In Finnish folklore goblin-like creatures (maahinen) would sometimes switch one of their own in place of a child and take the child with them underground.
Domestic Elf
Domestic elves known to finns as kotitonttu, were protectors of the household. Happy elves brought fortune and luck so respecting them with different gifts or rituals was a part of everyday life.
