This is my take on a cover for the book "Trumpet" (written by Jackie Kay)

"Trumpet" is considered to be a modern Scottish classic, and is very important to certain groups. It has had quite a lot written about it, and the main themes featured in it are fairly sensitive - for these reasons coming up with a new cover design was very challenging.

I ended up going with a style reminiscent of classic jazz posters - a style I felt was appropriate given that the book was about a jazz musician. The colours, however, I chose based both on neon signs, which were often seen outside jazz clubs in the 80s and 90s, but also on their association with gender, which also relates to one of the main themes of the book. 

Additionally, I decided to include the male ♂ and female ♀ gender symbols in the cover, but I decided to make them not immediately obvious to the viewer, so as not to give away too much about the story.
