Jake Burton Carpenter-A Snowboarding Pioneer in Vermont

Kendal A. Daiger is an established presence in the Stowe, Vermont community who works as a director of marketing at Spruce Peak Realty. In this role, Kendal A. Daiger focuses on promoting and marketing the luxury One Spruce Peak development project and Stowe Mountain Resort.

A local hero recently honored by the Stowe Mountain Resort is Jake Burton Carpenter, a snowboarding pioneer who passed away from cancer in 2019. Burton began crafting snowboards in 1977, at a time when skiing dominated winter sports on the slopes. As he told the New York Times in an interview, an impetus was that he had a desire to surf, but “knew snow because I was a skier.”

Starting with the Snurfer, a piece of wood with a steering rope tied to its nose, Burton established a workshop in a converted Londonderry, Vermont, barn after receiving a $150,000 inheritance from his grandmother. The success of his endeavor was gradual, with sales of 300 units the first year leading to sales in the thousands within three years.

By the late 1980s snowboarding had emerged as a rebellious, inexpensive alternative to skiing that surged in popularity to the point where it debuted as an Olympic sport at the 1998 Winter Games in Japan. True to his roots, Carpenter was not impressed by the embrace of snowboarding by the mainstream at Nagano, calling it “not a cool moment at all.”

The Stowe Mountain Resort is home to one of Jake Burton Carpenter’s favorite snowboarding runs of all time, "Lullaby Lane,” which was recently renamed "Jake's Ride” in his honor.
