The Achromatic Value

The Achromatic Value, and Texture.

Introduction:

During the second project, we were asked to choose a photo between many that we took during the first project of the photography course. I had the chance of trying different methods and materials to get a better result as a final touch. Between the bunch of photos, I took Gooderham Building. Not only I found the Gooderham building good perspective practice to make a real space but also I could turn it to a challenge for myself. I was coming up with the idea of turning the realistic space to an illusion or unrealistic space. In the meantime, I was exploring art knowledge and language. For instance, an Achromatic color is the one that has lightness with no hue or saturation. Besides, I got the knowledge of the value that refers to relative light and dark. It gave me a better understanding of the terms of being progressive and linear that refers to the value.

Materials:

White ink, Black Canson Paper, Photography, Adobe Photoshop

Creative Process:

During the second project of the foundation design course, we got ideas about the colors and additive primaries which are red, blue, and green. By mixing these three basic colors we can make secondaries colors. It was good practice for me as I came to a deep understanding of colors and the better understanding of hue which is circular and continues in the opposite of the value which is the liner. In color texture practice I got ideas of the color that drives from light, either natural or artificial, and so, I tried to bring the knowledge into to work with watercolor, color pencils, and markers. At first, I used the photoshoot to deform the picture in a way that I want to expose my feeling. It gave me a concept of the intuitive space which we learned during the second project. I had experiences of making compositions that come from imagination.
Workflow:

During the project process, I got the ideas of the steps of the value that has the start and the end. I benefitted from implied lines and hatching to contrast light and dark areas. The thumbnails were started by drawing on a tracing paper at first with a black pencil. My first attempt did not have a good transmission in terms of the feeling. The black Canson paper with white ink and pencil are the second choices for the Achromatic work. Although I was struggling with a way that I wanted to expose the art-work meaning.  If I want to go a little deeper into the meaning beyond the value project, I have to say that there is a strong connection between human souls and the instinct of the universe. I feel the soul transmission by terms of the birth and the short term journey in the world which is not being ended by death, but another transmission will happen. It is the meaning of the life that shows the unity of human’s souls and the universe.
Conclusion:

The building is still the building but if we go beyond, we will figure out there is nothing but us. The building, street, creatures around us all are one thing with a similar soul which is traveling to become a unity. In this matter, the implied line played as a guide leader to transmit specific feelings by using perspective. Also, the expressive line helped transmit the meaning and visual effects of the art-work by providing tools to make a scene. Besides, I approached the senses of several concepts such as low contrast and high contrast where I tried to draw the black and white painting with different materials. I benefited from the use of contours and terms of value. Not only I gained knowledge of art language and different concepts but also I had a chance to work with them in a real art project practically. If I had a chance to redo this project, I would use different techniques such as calligraphies to make the art-work much closer to my home country culture in terms of transmitting the feelings.
