The aim of this project was to create a book cover design for The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, a murder mystery book set in the late 1930’s. 

 

The design needed to attract a new target audience to read this classic book. The idea behind this design was is to take all of the key objects from the book and to present them is analytical and clinical way by depicting them in as diagrams, as if the investigator laid out the objects in front of him or looked them up in a book. The cover is designed to intrigue the readers and encourage them to look for the key objects and hidden layers in the story.

 

The colours where chosen to be light and refreshing, and set the book apart from other books of a similar genre. The colour blue represents the constant rain and gloom in the book and the red is the blood and passion, the two combined can be a little hard on the eyes but I feel this gives the cover an unsettling feeling further promoting the fact that it is a murder mystery.
