William Brooks's profile

Christchurch Central Library

The concept behind pluraform_v5 was to look at systems from ecology and apply this system to architecture, relying upon the system's rational process to design the building - functionalism. Similar approaches have been taken by the likes of Francois Roche. Replicating this found system from nature through digital process then "unleashing" it upon the selected site produces very unique and fantastical forms of architecture with a solid logic behind every design decision.

The driving idea behind this combination was revisiting the idea of a library in this new age of a digital world, and how to get people physically into a library. This hyrbidizing forces programmatic paths to interesect with the library, whether it is retail, commercial or hotel, creating interactions where-ever these moments occur.

The physical aspect of the building was formed by emiting flows from the organizational flow, then pouring a viscous flow over the top to create the buildings skin with openings and structure. Finally, these were used as a mould to pour in the glass circulation space, self-assembling within the exisiting structure.
