This is a table I designed while on exchange during the winter semester of 2019 at San Diego State University. While abroad, I had an amazing experience in which provided me with a whole new set of skills in both graphic and product design. As the style of teaching is much different compared to Concordia, I was forced to adapt which resulted in an amazing learning experience overall.

As I already had some woodworking capabilities, I enrolled in a furniture design course in hope to expand my knowledge. Knowing that the style of teaching would be a little different then at Concordia, I was surprised to learn that the students were expected to complete the projects with no guidance. Compared to Concordia where our design courses are held in classrooms and projects are completed with help from various technicians, the classes at SDSU were held in the wood shop where we learned hands on skills and put them to the test on our on. As a result, this pushed me outside of my comfort zone and turned out to be an amazing learning experience.

The brief for this project was to design a table for any specific use and it had to fit within specific measurement requirements. I decided to design and make a bedside table which had specific spots for certain objects we often find beside our beds such as a phones and water bottles. I also included a phone charger holder and a pouch that could carry any small items like change, watches, bracelets, etc.

The materials used were solid walnut, oak dowels, as well as canvas fabric for the hand-sewn pouch.
