Chromatic Message

The goal of this project was to use a combination of raster and vector imagery to create a double-gate fold brochure that enhances typographic form and complements the meaning of a message. My job was to utilize both text and image in order to add depth and meaning to a message of my choice. I was also responsible for developing and building on a theme over time and demonstrating technical knowledge of 2-color match/spot printing. The final work is presented as a 28 x 9 inch flat print, or 7 x 9 inch folded brochure.

Follow this link if you're interested in seeing photos that document the process I took in achieving my final solution.
Above is the front cover of my brochure. The message I chose ("there will be mountains you won't move") felt poetic in nature, and I wanted the imagery in the brochure to reflect this. The first page of this brochure represents the introspective and reflective feeling of the message. I maintained the use of nature imagery throughout.

This is the second spread for the brochure, which also exists as the climax of the message. "...mountains you won't..." represents the idea that there will be things in life that you are unable to overcome. I chose to represent this idea through the rigid structure and layout, guided by an underlying grid, as well as the images of mountains. Not only do the mountains represent obstacles, things standing between us and a goal, but they also play into the theme of nature imagery that I established on the front cover.

The final image deviates from the form established on the prior spreads. Unlike the structured layout used up to this point, this final spread breaks the grid, and the type is "let free" to roam throughout the composition. This final portion of my message represents the resolution; the acceptance that it's alright that there will be things one cannot do in life. The viewer "steps away" from the mountain (obstacle), and the type represents the feeling of relief and liberation felt when the idea is fully understood and accepted.

The first two portions of my brochure use black-and-white imagery. The color images used on my final spread create a contrast that represents the change in attitude when the idea is accepted by the audience. At first, one feels a sense of defeat when facing an obstacle they are unable to overcome. However, when this fact is accepted and understood as normal, the "color" comes through, representing a sense of relief and freedom.

I chose to use the font Bodoni (regular and italic) in my brochure. I chose this font because it best represented the poetic feel of the message. Also, the contrast in stroke weights in Bodoni fit the differing feelings held by the viewer as they progress through the story. Italic type was used to emphasize particular words and create a sense of movement on my final spread.

Both sides of my final spread can be seen above. The double-gate brochure was an extremely practical and economic way of telling a story, and leading an audience through a progressive narrative. The contrast in color and black-and-white imagery seen on the two sides represents the differing feelings held by the viewer from the beginning to the end of the narrative.
