"Grave Digger" Packaging

Designing the prototypes to the "Grave Digger" package I based the original dielines off box packaging designed to hang in stores by their board tabs. I wanted to make something fun to match my skull object and pursued the idea of transforming what would be the "hanging tab" on a regular box into a grave stone. Along with being influenced by the hanging box design I drew inspiration for my concept from the quirky boxes sold at checkout in Barnes and Nobles establishments, such as mini buddha's and games. The original design of the box was much more cubical and plane, but was updated into a more trapezoidal shape that bares resemblance to cryptic mausoleums. Excluding the board material that was used for the majority of the project I incorporated a "Ziploc" bag that glued into the cut out window on the box to showcase the skull and brown paper shredding's. The paper shredding's were used to simulate dirt the skull would be buried in, allowing consumers to "grave dig". In better circumstances I hoped to purchase packaging "peanuts" and spray paint them brown. The package was designed to be open from the top as if you were unearthing the ground beneath the gravestone and then digging for the skull through the shredding's.
Considering the visual design of the "Grave Digger" package I wanted to make a quirky concept as previously stated, something that would stand out as weird and grab the attention of customers. Based on the idea of gravedigging the package was designed in Adobe Illustrator to resemble a grave as it would be seen if excavated straight from the ground. Because I was playing with a dark concept I wanted to keep it humorous and fun. I created a small variation of bugs and other bones to be featured around the packaging that would relate to the "grave" idea along with keeping the design from being overly bland, or plain. The text used on the package was chosen based of its resemblance to 70's/80's horror movies which paired well with the overall dark humor concept of the packaging. Inspiration from older horror films also brought about the idea of the blood splatter background on the main text and the bright green highlight around the letters. Comical quotes are featured around the box to again match with the dark humor idea of grave digging a small plush skull.
