My concept of this project is KABUKI, which is traditional Japanese performance art. It is for the Japanese tea packaging. Mai of the brand name means “dance” in English. I designed packaging using Japanese proper colours. I tried not to vivid colour as possible. Each character was unique and individual so I wanted to design the simple composition.
KABUKI means that is traditional Japanese performance art. It consists of drama, dance and music, like musical. Kabuki is played by only male actors. Women’s roles are played by male actors, called “onnagata”. Their makeup is called “Kumadori” and it expresses their characters, and their costumes are very elaborate and spectacular. Kabuki was designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009.
