PROFESSOR TRACY FEATHERSTONE
Above is a 3 poster series of different locations in Italy. I took these photographs in each of their respective locations. I used Adobe Illustrator for some of the text, but the majority of this assignment was done through Adobe Photoshop. The constraints of this assignment were using the colors within a strip of a Master Painting. Here is my strip below.
The rest of the constraints included any medium of choice and that additional hues outside of the color strip is allowed. I chose to do a travel poster series because I'm more comfortable creating digital artwork rather than physical. I also get extremely inspired by travel posters. It combines composition, typography, color theory, as well as having an understanding of the audience. At the bottom of this page are three travel posters that guided me and inspired me for this assignment. For the colors used in all three of my pieces, I used the color drop tool on the strip and used them for the fonts as well as throughout the landscapes.
In this poster the red within the text is from the strip. As well as the light blue water, the gray mountains in the background, and some of the neutral browns in the rocks to the left. The remaining hues are originally from my photographs, which are also at the bottom of this page for reference.
In this poster design above, the color used in both the text and the drop shadow are from the color strip. As well as the greens through the hole in the rock wall and also the rock itself, some of the more neutral colors are from the strip.
Again, in the design above, the colors in the text and drop shadow are from the strip, as well as the burnt orange coat and the neutral yellow color of the walls from light to dark.
Above are the original photographs used for these three poster designs. The original picture used for the Venezia poster (right) was awarded in Photographer's Forum for Best Photography of 2018.
These poster designs above are not my work, I found them online for inspirations with color theory, typefaces, how do edit my photographs to look poster-like, as well as how to use composition effectively.
With this project, I learned how posters are typically designed. I never completely noticed how poster designs are usually digitally painted/edited. Usually they are not actual digital photographs. This project helped me realize to appreciate even the smallest details, such as the medium used.
