At the 5. Main Course we worked on restoration. My subject - a chair from approx 1900. The period around 1900 is characterized by great style confusion, which is also clearly seen in the chair’s expression. The exterior geometry of the chair is Chinese-inspired, while the chair’s decorated sprouts are based on European furniture art, with hand-cut flowers. The chair was first separated by 60 degrees warm water and then the splintered backrest pieces were glued (reinforced with dowels), sanded and the whole chair was French polished. Prior to separation, the chair was cleaned with furniture cleaner. As part of the 5. Main Course, a report was made, describing techniques, the history of the chair, with an oral exam resulting in the grade 12. Subsequently I have upholstered the seat with natural leather. By wish of the owner I chose not to conceal the different cracks and signs of wear, keeping the ‘history’ of chair.
