Benefits of Laser Engraving Mold Cavities?

In the pattern or mold making industry laser marking and laser engraving technologies are emerging for use in mold cavity machining. Mold makers know it's difficult and time-consuming to machine small cavities in molds. And generally, extensive hand polishing is necessary to complete the job. The task is made even more complex if the mold is already hardened or made from pre-hardened steel. Deep laser engraving offers an alternative non-contact machining method that is successful on hardened tool steels and can access areas that are difficult to reach.
What Is Deep Laser Engraving?
Deep laser engraving is generally regarded as a process of machining which removes up to 30 thousandths of an inch of material. It is often used for adding details to molds such as patterns and shapes, or for adding identification marks.
Benefits of Laser Engraving
A significant advantage of using lasers to engrave molds is that they operate well on hardened steel surfaces. It also works wherever there is a line of sight to the point to be marked.Laser engraving gives a better finish to the surface that usually requires no hand polish. It has a lower impact on molds' surface strength and eliminates the possibility of micro-fracturing that exists with EDM. Deep laser engraving will minimize costs and maximize the scope of work performed by toolmakers and die, makers. Lasers have demonstrated their usefulness in mold engraving and repair with their ability to successfully weld exceptional features while providing an excellent finish.
At Laserod Technologies, we offer mold makers with a cost-effective method of engraving and modifying molds that are faster than comparable processes. We specialize in high resolution, high precision, small spot size, laser beam machining for medical, semiconductor, display, and microelectronics applications. We perform precision micromachining on all microelectronic substrates such as ceramic, silicon, diamond, BEO, and all others. Laserod Technologies counts among its customers' such Fortune 500 companies as Boeing, Northrop Grumman, IBM, Lockheed, Mitsui, Raytheon, Rockwell Scientific, Teledyne, Tyco, and others. Laserod's university clients, nearly 100 in number, have included Stanford, UCLA, Caltech, MIT, and Brown University.
