Blood in the Shape of a Girl

To me this piece is about being overwhelmed by the world, humanity specifically. All the noise that inspires waves of emotions that seem daunting. But I showed this to a friend recently and she said she thought of it more that the colors were a bright and overwhelming power coming from her, instead of attacking her. I like both interpretations. That's the thing about artwork. Once you publish it, it's no longer just yours. And in order to share it you have to be okay with that.
The title of the piece comes from a lyric by a Bjork song, "Bachelorette." The full lyric is "I am a fountain of Blood in the shape of a girl." This always resonated with me deeply.
Lastly this piece took so long, even though it looks fairly simple, because I didn't want to have individual stencils made for each color. That would have required me to wait until I had access to a machine that could do it, and I was too impatient. If I had just waited I think it would have come out a lot cleaner and nicer, but c'est la vie.
