Visual Art: Kahlo

The piece (2019) is created with a cyan blue sateen polyester fabric and hand-embroidered with red thread. I chose to work with such a flowing and thin fabric in order to project the symbolism and visual appeal of a flag. Flags can represent freedom but also power and authority which are all key aspects of the subject of the piece. Depicted through the shadows of her face and winding shall, Frida Kahlo stands proud and tall with a stoic yet empowering look. Bordering the piece is a renowned quote of hers: “I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.”
For hundreds of years, women have been viewed and treated as though they are less important and only purposeful for mundane and tedious domestic tasks. Tasks such as sewing and embroidery fall directly into this category. For this reason, I chose to depict the stereotype-smashing artist in the way that society once wanted her to be. She kept her head above such restricting waters but the world around her nevertheless did their best to drown her in such ideals. While spending hours upon hours embroidering the face of a woman who inspires me to a great degree, I reflected on the idea of feminism and what it means to be a woman. Women have been marginalized and constricted but are now finally starting to see the light of day.
