Here we were given a brief to pick a word from a booklet, research it and then create a typeface based on that word. I selected 'undeveloped' as I was drawn to its meaning of something being embryonic, primitive, immature and unsophisticated. To emphasise the feeling of it being undeveloped I created it in two stages.
Stage 1 - The letterform is undeveloped, having been created by someone who’s handwriting is still developing. I asked my children and their friend to write out the alphabet on post-it notes and then selected the least developed letterforms to create my typeface.
Stage 2 - The typeface has been reproduced by scribing the letterforms through carbon paper and applying variable pressure to make them appear not fully developed and to try and create three weights.
