Loving a Landscape

Loving a landscape
I'm constantly looking for new subjects to practice my technical skills, so outside of my horror work, my drawings vary wildly. Occasionally however, something will really grab my attention like the stunning Saltwick Bay and I revisit time and again. The above is my latest charcoal pencil drawing, featuring the wreck of the Admiral van Tromp and Black Nab.
This was my first study of the subject - on this day the shale was wet and a flat grey, so didn't show the marbling of the salt lines.
Standing in a slightly different spot and the background changes to Saltwick Nab - again,a change in the weather to bright sun between clouds completely alters the appearance of the wreck and the shale it came to rest on.
That view didn't have the wider drama of the image at the start of this project but did make for some nice smaller scale studies.
The shale outcrop of Black Nab is a fascinating subject all by itself - in the rain....
reflected in standing water...
brooding against a heavy sky. No doubt I will continue to explore, it's an interesting exercise to study one spot in different conditions and see just how much light affects the nature of an image.
