An Increase in Natural and Organic Skincare Products
Dr. Robert S. Baraczek of Arlington, Texas, has spent the last few years as a research and development consultant in the cosmetics and skincare industries. As a consultant in this area, Dr. Robert S. Baraczek advises clients on new advances in skincare, including natural and organic products. Today's cosmetic and skincare industries are moving away from synthetic brands to brands featuring more organic and natural products, with sales forecast to increase significantly in the next five to eight years.

Over the last few years, sustainability and a move toward more natural living has driven many industries, including the beauty industry, to swap out synthetic (chemical) ingredients with more natural ones, and in some cases, to use the words “natural” and “organic” interchangeably. Natural products are usually ones that are plant-based and are not to be confused with “clean” products that are free of parabens, phthalates, or sulfates and other chemicals. An organic designation is different because the FDA determines whether a product is organic based on a USDA-defined percentage of qualified ingredients.

Even so, the natural and organic product industry is expected to double to $22 billion by 2024. Some credit this shift to customer fear of using ingredients that are made synthetically. However, other reasons point to market influences such as customers having access to more products through online shopping, distribution channels expanding, and more premium products being offered. New product development combined with today's advertising methods and a higher number of consumers purchasing premium products will also drive spending in this market.
