Wonder: A book cover design

Wonder
A book cover design.

This is a concept I created for book Wonder. The story is about a child who has a rare condition that has ultimately left him with a severe facial “difference” and his struggles with friendships and starting school. Looking at the original cover lead me onto looking into abstract art. I thought that the original cover was eye catching because it was quite an unusual character style; it’s abstracted, quite minimalist, subtle, simplified composition, peculiar design, and the characters differences are accentuated. This unusual and slightly peculiar illustration style highlights the books message of individuality and difference. I wanted to use this message as the theme for my cover because I think it’s one of if not the most important part of the story … Because I suppose if the character didn't have these differences then there would be no story. I started to research abstract art but the more figurative types, I love this style because the composition is always really unique and interesting. Kindness and friendship comes not only from accepting these differences in people but by the realisation that there is no normal and it’s the differences that truly count so should be appreciated. Furthermore it’s the realisation that at the end of the day we are all simply made up of lines and shapes. Some peoples lines are longer or shorter, some peoples shapes are bigger or smaller. This is exactly what I was thinking about when coming up with this idea.
