Bombay International School
School, Babulnath, Mumbai

The Bombay international school is housed in a heritage residential precinct in Babulnath, Mumbai. The residential building has slowly evolved into a school over the last 50 years.
The structure is of a load-bearing construction with a combination of brick and stone masonry.
The school has recently adopted an IB curriculum, synergising their vision of a balanced and liberal learning culture established five decades ago.

The project was awarded to the architects through an invited competition process. Our proposal recommended a concept for learning by creating immersive and flexible environments. The shift is from a traditional classroom-based learning environment to creating subject rooms which offer a varied environment for both learning and interaction between students and teachers.

The margins of the facility are reprogrammed for effective functional usage. The programs were restructured across the building to homogenise the program distribution. The project was conceptualised through an interactive process between the various stakeholders: students, teachers, parents and the architects.

The heritage character of the building is retained vis-à-vis the constituent elements of the building, namely, the façade, the fenestrations and its vibrant patterns, and the overall building opens out onto itself to create shared spaces across the building. The tight circulation through compact school building is also released by creating these common spaces in the direction of movement.

The building looks at creating a contemporary learning environment rooted in the collective consciousness of the B.I.S. vision.
