Сarnival of light

In 2018 the Circle of Light Moscow International festival was opened by the Carnival of Light multimedia show that broke down borders between an actors’ play and modern technologies.  Due to computer graphics each character played by an actor transformed into some light phenomena and continued to perform as a form of one of the many spectacular tools used on the site. This way large scale video projections, sparkling fountains, lighting devices, lasers, flame jets as well as a firework display became characters of the show.

If the multimedia show consisted of separated spectacular acts before, now it has also an interesting scenario that keeps attention of the audience throughout the show. A magic nature of light was a base of the plot. We showed a mysterious and even a bit mystical story about a wandering carnival. After dark it came to the city, set tents, showed its incredible performances and disappeared with the sun. a mysterious and a little bit crazy host, he was also a carnival owner - the main character of the performance accompanied the audience and showed them fantastic acts, among which everyone could find something close for himself. Thus children liked a marionette dance and fantastic beasts as well young people liked a fiery gin act and performance of light balancers, adult viewers heard an aria of the famous opera diva and admired the tricks of the wizard. The scenario was originally written in such a way as to appeal to a wide audience not only of different ages, but also from different countries, because a lot of tourists come to the festival from Russia and abroad, while the audience of live broadcasts estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

Stage decision was designed in such a way as to ensure excellent visibility for all audience areas. The show setup was built on cubes and matrices, all spectacular tools had volume and depth. Video projection on the main structure created three-dimensional effects from all sides and provided a unique picture. Water screens made it possible to create a two-dimensional depth and bring the characters to the forefront - It was a stunner for the audience when the characters came from the structure and showed up in front of them. Fountains with large-scale matrices also made three-dimensions effects that were perfect seen from all audience zones.

A great number of teams from Russia and abroad participated in the project. Each spectacular tool was performed by a separate team, while coordinated work was needed at an early stage of the project. Joint technical works were organized on the site. Choreography went under supervision of suppliers of projection equipment and production that created video content. A clear score was invented and spelled out for each light tool. Simulations from all teams were collected in one video file and due to it all participants knew all details of the show, while it also allowed to promptly make changes to achieve the best results. Also during the preparation period simulations and even virtual reality were actively used, which simulated the viewing process from different spectator zones.
