Structural Semiotic Analysis Task
This task requires the team to discuss and analyse “Joker” movie poster using semiotic perspectives and identify the signs and codes within the poster.
Interpretative Codes
The actor is wearing a dark red suit and a teal shirt, all complimentary with the green hair. The dark red color shows the anger while the green color shows the envy or jealousy. The actor is wearing a clown make up and painted a smile on the face, to show that he is always smiling, as a clown should be.

Textual Codes
The ‘JOKER’ title has the largest font size because it focuses of the movie and it represents who the main character turns into. The movie title is in a Sans Serif typeface while the other texts have similar spacing to the movie title. The smallest font represents the company and partnership and the movie will be available in IMAX. October 4 is the release date of the film.

Technical Codes
The camera shot is closeup shot, lighting above the character used is the key light. The poster cuts off part of the actor’s face to create a feeling of suspicion and mystery. Very little detail except for the main character himself is shown, focusing mainly on the texture, age and his tired face.

Social Codes
He is being driven insane by the society because of his mental illness. He is also bullied for his job and disregarded by the people in the city where he lives. The clown makeup was remnant of his previous job which he got fired.

Genre
Psychological thriller, Crime, Drama
This poster mainly consist of the character himself, his face is very detailed and has a very serious tone overall. Furthermore, the background is dark and mysterious.
