Yellowstone National Park geyser/ Airport project

My final composition is of a geyser located in Yellowstone National Park. To create this, I used watercolor and sketched it with pencil. The mountain behind it creates a horizon line while the geyser is the main focal point because of the bright colors used. The website I used was Planetware.com.

The principles used in this painting are unity, variety, and proportion. Unity is used because it creates a sense of wholeness in the artwork. Variety is used along the spectrum of color and the contrast between the blue of the geyser water and the blue of the sky. Proportion is used with the trees and the horizon line involving the mountain.

The connection of color creates a bright and beautiful mood, yet the shading of the clouds in the background create a dark and mysterious mood. The impact that this has on the viewer is depth and contrast between the bright geyser and the dark green mountain.

What I would critique is the watercolor used on the mountain. I should have spent more time testing with light and darkness of watercolor. Given that this is my first time using watercolor, I would say that I did a nice job on the geyser itself. Another thing I should have added was a reflection of the trees In the water of the geyser.
