June 2019. As part of my Work Training Program I was asked to design a replacement lid for an old GDR Coffee Grinder. The (broken) original was used as a template and I decided I wanted to improve the usability of it (had to be removed by inserting fingernails under the lip and lifting it. The first idea (which can be seen in the image below), to 3D print a lid proved to be an improvement, but was deemed too fragile to handle daily usage. We had plexiglass in our workshop, so the idea to create a very solid lid from Plexiglass was born. Taking a square piece of Plexiglass, we used a lathe to create the lid, then again to create a brass insert to close the hole created by the lathe. The final version now allows the owner to pull the lid up easily using the overhanging edges of the lid, while ensuring it closes snuggly.
