鸿是指大雁，而鹄则是天鹅。白者鸿鹄，亦凤属。在中国神话传说中，鸿鹄则是白色的凤凰。《西郊杂咏》之十四：“鸿鹄羣南飞，千里共盘桓。”因鸿鹄善高飞，常比喻志向远大的人。凤形和翅形结合，昂头向上，寓意志向远大。配色取自天空，青出于蓝。

In Chinese expressions, “Hong” refers to wild goose, while “Hu” is a swan. There is also a Chinese mythology, in which Honghu is a kind of white phoenix. People give Honghu extremely high admiration and often compare it to an ambitious man because of its excellent ability of flying high. The combination of phoenix shape and wing shape, with the raised head, stands for a great will. The colour scheme comes from the sky, taking the meaning of Chinese proverb “Blue comes from the indigo plant but is bluer than the plant itself—the pupil surpasses the master”.
