Animal welfare organizations often recruit volunteers to foster abandoned or stray puppies and prepare them for life with a forever family. While taking care of rescue pups is extremely rewarding, fosterers should keep the following tips in mind to have the best experience.

Prepare the Environment - Puppies are curious by nature and often explore their world teeth first. Before bringing a puppy home, it's important to place out of harm's way any objects that may be dangerous if ingested. This includes houseplants, cleaning supplies, and medicine. Any expensive or valuable items should also be stored out of the puppy’s reach.

Socialize - Young dogs must experience positive exposure to humans and other animals early in their lives to develop proper social skills. While the actual socialization process will differ based on the dog’s temperament, fosterers should provide pups with frequent supervised interactions with people and pets.

Train - To be suitable for a home, puppies must be able to cope positively with being alone. This can be done through crate training or putting the puppy in a safe area. If done correctly, dogs will eventually associate being alone with a safe environment and feel comfortable on their own.
