Champagne Picnic at Potem Falls

The days are getting warmer and the wonderful weather requires we go outside to enjoy it. Here’s an idea for a way to revel in affordable luxury: try a simple picnic at a waterfall. Bring a bottle of champagne, perhaps some cheese and crackers, and someone you love.
This is Potem Falls, a 70 foot waterfall that comes off the Pit River arm of Shasta Lake, near Round Mountain and Montgomery Creek, California.  From Fender’s Ferry Road, continue for about nine miles on a winding Forest Service road (it turns into a dirt road that’s tolerable to 97% of vehicles), cross a bridge over the Pit River Arm, and about half a mile onward lies a turnout and what’s left of a sign.

A short hike down the hill on a switchback trail leads to a beautiful oasis. This spot is great for a day away from the bustle of civilization; have a picnic, go swimming (there’s a rope swing!), and enjoy the nice waterfall breeze.
