"La vida. Instrucciones de uso" (1978), original "La vie mode d'emploi", "Life: a user's manual" in English, is the title of the book by Georges Perec and the subject of my Bachelor Thesis, supervised by Ángel Sesma.
I chose this book because it is a story formed by multiple stories that took place in a building located in the imaginary road of Simon-Crubellier 11, in the center of Paris, France. The author narrates, in a particular style (using the building and its 100 rooms as a layout on which he creates a pattern to tell the life of the past or present inhabitants) every single detail of the rooms, the relationship among the people living there and when the events took place.
After carefully reading and classifying the information from the book, I created illustrations, maps and schemes to explain the book without losing the complexity and the levels of detail it offers to the reader. (Note: all the information according to my notes on the book, is real: this is not a mock-up or an unfinished version)
"La vida. Instrucciones de uso" (1978), título original "La vie mode d'emploi", es un libro escrito por Georges Perec y el tema de mi Trabajo de Fin de Grado supervisado por Ángel Sesma para la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
La elección de este libro viene dada por la gran cantidad de información que podemos encontrar en éste, tratándose así de una historia formada por historias que transcurren en un edificio de viviendas en la calle Simon-Crubellier 11, en París, Francia. El autor narra en un estilo muy particular los sucesos ocurridos, tanto en el presente como en el pasado, de sus habitantes desde su construcción, además de crear, a través de la propia organización por capítulos de la historia, una serie de puzzles y esquemas que conectan la información de personajes, hechos y objetos.
Tras leer cuidadosamente la novela y clasificar la información en varios grupos, he creado ilustraciones, mapas y esquemas que expliquen del libro sin perder, no obstante, la complejidad y el nivel de detalle que presenta al lector. (Nota: toda la información es real y ha sido escrita de acuerdo a mis apuntes sobre el libro)
Following an old-looking style, I used straight lines and dark blue for the background, just like the architectural drawings from some decades ago. The symbol for the project, the square-shaped pattern, is the imaginary path drawn on the front wall of the house following the chapter's sequence in the book, in which each of them describes one of the rooms.
Recreando el estilo de las antiguas láminas de arquitectura, he utilizado azul oscuro para el fondo y líneas rectas. El símbolo del proyecto es un patrón que representa el recorrido trazado siguiendo el orden de los capítulos del libro sobre la fachada del edificio.
Objects
I classified the information into three kinds: objects (in the rooms, described in detail by the author or having significant importance to the characters), which I drew inside the house as if it was a cut-out you can see through, a character map and an events timeline.
For the objects map I kept a simple line to showcase the complexity of the stories of each room represented just by the objects of the people who were living or once lived there.
He clasificado la información en tres tipos: objetos (aquellos presentes en las habitaciones y descritos en detalle por el autor o con gran importancia para los personajes), como veríamos si mirásemos la sección de la casa, un mapa de personajes y una línea temporal de eventos.
Para el mapa de objetos he mantenido un estilo de línea simple, tratando de representar así la complejidad de las historias de aquellos que vivían o vivieron en ella alguna vez simplemente a través de sus objetos.
Characters
For the character map, I created two big circles. The inner layer are the ones living in the house before the story took place, the ones in the outer layer are the ones who still live there while the story is being told (or died short time before, only a few weeks or months). There are also ten icons showing if the person was a male or a female and their estimated age (as many times their physical appearance is not described), as well as baby and pet icons. The position in the circle shows in which floor they lived, and the lines connecting characters one to another show if they knew each other and, if so, which kind of relationship they had: family, friends, couple or professional relationship.
El mapa de personajes está compuesto por dos circunferencias. En la interior podemos encontrar a aquellos que vivieron en la casa antes de que la historia comenzara, en la exterior se encuentran aquellos que aún viven ahí en el momento en que se narran los hechos (o que fallecieran unas pocas semanas o meses antes de la historia). Hay diez iconos que representan, a rasgos generales, el sexo del personaje y una estimación de la edad, ya que muchas veces no se describe su apariencia en el libro, simplemente se hace referencia al año de su nacimiento o directamente su franja de edad, además de un icono para mascotas. La posición a lo largo de la circunferencia muestra en qué piso vivían, y las líneas que conectan los personajes, la relación entre ellos, que se clasifican en: familia, amigos, pareja o relación profesional.
Events map
The events map shows the significant situations Perec narrates and how long they take. They use a similar visual code as the character map; the thickness of the lines represent the floor in which the characters lived (this is relevant since it is part of the structure of the building and the story and it is also a good reference to find the characters easily) and how long they lasted. Under the timeline and the year references we can find the years lived by some of the characters, those whose birth and death date were mentioned in the book.
El mapa de eventos muestra aquellas los hechos más importantes que Perec narra en su novela y su duración. En este mapa utilizo un código visual parecido al que aparece en el mapa de personajes; el grosor de las líneas horizontales representa el piso en el que vivía el personaje (esto es relevante al ser parte de la estructura del edificio y de la historia y también una referencia para encontrar a cada personaje más fácilmente) y el tiempo que duró el "evento". Debajo de la línea temporal encontramos los años que vivieron algunos de los personajes de la obra.
Here I showed the main aspects. Graphic material like posters and brochures were also printed, but they basically displayed the same information in print format.
