"My child, keep silent, the night presses us, blacks the already bright green waters, / looks at us the moon that in the sky rises / sleeps quietly to the rustling of breakers."
Begins with a lullaby the story of Kotick, the son of Matka and Sea Catch born on the beach of Novastoshnah, crowded with seal males fighting fiercely to find a place for their family. Just born, the puppy is all head and shoulders, with aquamarine eyes, like all the others, but its fur already reveals something unusual. Kotick will be a seal like never seen in the world: a white seal! Lovingly cared for by her mother, the puppy lives a serene childhood in Novastoshnah, playing with her companions and gradually acquiring familiarity with water to become an excellent swimmer. As he grows up experiencing the gifts and dangers of the sea, we discover that it is not just the white fur that makes it special: Kotick is a rebel and is willing to do everything to make his dreams come true. After witnessing a slaughter of seals at the hands of some men, he will not have peace until he finds, for himself and his companions, a place to live in harmony and tranquility. A place where no human has ever set foot.
The story by Rudyard Kipling, based on one of his most beloved novels, The Jungle Book, is here reproposed in a new translation and enhanced by Roger Olmos's powerful, vividly colored illustrations. While not completely abandoning the surreal details typical of his images, the artist takes a more realistic approach, focusing on the chromatic intensity, the materiality and the plasticity of the volumes. The palette alternates warm earth tones and cold colors, with the brilliant greens of the vegetation and splendid blues that transport us to the seabed, while the reds come to hurt the beauty of nature, staining it with blood.
A timeless classic, the adventure of a white seal determined to fight for the good of its colony, but also the story of a son who rebels against the tradition and the will of his father to pursue his dreams. A story of love and courage for young people who will change our future.
