FashionTwista playing cards

This project was part of my second year studies. The brief introduced us to drypoint and lino printing and set the task to design a new and original set of playing cards. I combined fashion photography and collage to create unusual figures and named the collection "FashionTwista"  which was a play on the word 'fashionista' and referred to the strange, twisted characters on my cards.
Below are my lino-cut number cards, using different elements from fashion photographs collaged together to create the number shapes.
My drypoint sheets are shown below.
I continued the collage effect to create the letters on the symbol cards, as shown above with the 'Queen' and below with the 'King' and 'Jack'.
I continued these collaged letters to create a typeface to use for the relevant written parts of the project.
I enjoyed experimenting with these techniques for the first time but I learnt that they were incredibly time consuming with the compulsory stages of inking up, wiping excess, printing, cleaning and drying inbetween every print means that it is not a quick paced method. However the ability to create textures, tones and shadows by hand (through controlling the application of ink) is an exciting feature and so makes it worthwhile.
