One of my favorite things to do in New Orleans is listening to music/podcasts while walking around the city on a beautiful sunny day... and on one day in March of 2019, I did just that. On that walk I was inspired by the beautiful architectural styles in the streets, especially the Creole Cottages, Raised Center-Hall Cottages, and Shotgun Houses.

Here are a some of the many photos that inspired this project:
a chromatic place. big easy inspired houses.
just a house on a street. This illustration is the first of the series, originally designed for print.
another house on a street. Well, I obviously could not stop after creating the first house... after all, the cyan house needed some neighbors. So, along came the magenta house to keep him company.
another house on another street. For the third house, I convinced myself to go vertical - why not, right?
Kathy’s house. Upon asking a good friend (yes, her name is Kathy) for feedback on the previous house illustrations, she requested that I make her home. I obviously agreed. So, she sent me a blurry photo at an awkward angle from Google maps (I forgive you) and from that image I created the above illustration. Kathy was definitely excited to see her patio finally clean, and I was happy she liked the final product.
Did you notice the blue porch ceiling? --- Whether a tradition/superstition/theory/belief, the porch ceiling is painted blue like many other Southern homes. Some believe the blue ceiling is said to bring good luck to the home and help to ward away evil spirits. The blue is also thought to help trick insects into thinking the ceiling is the sky, discouraging them from congregating on the porch.
