Ivry — The Floating City

As the final assignment of a 3D Foundation class, the objective was to create an imaginary space for an imaginary species, using the 3 main elements - Dominant, Subdominant and Subordinate, from the largest / heaviest to the smallest / lightest respectively.
In a group of 3 (credits to Debbie Ng and Shoki Lin), Ivry was created to be a city fragment with a central hub similar to a central business district, where all main daily activities take place. Ivry is a high-technology city where inhabitants live in geometric shapes of different sizes surrounding the central hub. They travel by gliding around the white ethereal paths.
The Hub: The Dominant piece. The central hub where all daily activities and work take place is made with a wire mesh. By first constructing a main cocoon-shaped frame with a thick metal wire, a thin metal wire was then weaved throughout the entire structure to construct a shell. Then, a coil of LED lights was inserted from the bottom to light up the entire hub and complete the high-tech appearance of the hub.
Home: The Subdominant. Each living quarter is constructed by a geometric shape formed by pentagons. These structures varies in size much like any houses do, and a small coil of LED is placed within each paper structure to light up the home. The paper was blotched with white paint, which turns off-white when shined through with light, giving a warmth that living spaces ought to have. The different thickness of paint caused by blotching creates textures and ripples on the exterior of these homes.
Ivry in the day: Strips of white acrylic plastic are cut and heated, curved and placed within the city fragment to act as paths and play the role of the Subordinate. This strips look lightweight and act as "roads" for inhabitants to glide around. Every element is propped up with thin transparent acrylic rods to create the floating city, with wires going through these tubes and converging underneath the board to complete the circuit.
