Passing through Prayagraj

The city of Prayagraj holds special significance, as the holy confluence of the rivers Ganga and Yamuna, making it an important pilgrim hub for a lot of Hindus. Over the years it has also been the site of immersion of ashes of several national leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi in 1948
The city thus sees a significant of various ascetics and monks travelling here from all corners of the country to meditate and pray. Prayagraj is also home to one of the world's largest pilgrimage events, the Kumbha Mela, held every 12 years.
A young girl brings around the prayer tray to tourists at the river bank, offering them to partake in receiving the blessings of the lamp's flame.
The rise in tourism as well as the populace of the region, was a common cause behind unnecessary and unexpected congestions along the roads, as the primary road to cross the river was the smaller bridge, which had narrow lanes and lower load-carrying abilities.

Therefore, in order to cater to the demand of society and make life simpler, the  New Yamuna bridge was constructed to provide a certain level of accessibility and smoothness to the tranport sii
A rowboat takes the tourists around the confluence and through the river. The steady inflow of tourists, priests and ascetics alike, creates a healthy economy for the boatmen operating in the region.
A  flock of birds fly around and over the river, circling boats and whatnot, waiting on the generous passengers to feed the fish in the river, which are then captured in swift dives by these birds.
The main ghat in Allahabad is Saraswati Ghat, on the banks of Yamuna. Stairs from three sides descend to the green water of the Yamuna. Here, the ghat is seen shimmering to the street lamps in the distance.

The city of Allahabad has a lot to offer and teach, and these photos are a very concise gist of everything I felt worth capturing in the 2 days I was there for. I shall hopefully be coming back soon to research and capture more of Allahabad.
