IJUSI AFRIKA TYPOGRAFIKA

Brief: For this brief Garth Walker required us to design an original type font with an African theme to it. The font had to be hand-generated first before being rendered on the computer.  We were to look all around Durban and base our theme on any event or anything that happens in the city ofDurban that is African tradition. We also had to design a poster that incorporates the font that we designed.

Solution: I based my concept on the taxi rank. As I walked around town I realised that taxis are part of our African tradition. Most of our African brothers use taxis as a means of transportation. I walked around the different taxi rank locations and identified typography on the steel structures of the shelters. All my font was based on the type that I saw on the shelters so I used it for my alphabets. The name of the font is called "SIYAYA", which is the Toyota Hi-Ace minibus taxi that is most common at taxi ranks.
