African Soil | iJusi Magazine, Typografika

Create a unique lettering/typography/font, the font can be inspired or be influenced by anything that is ‘African’. Minimum requirements for the font was 26 characters, with an option of including numbers and punctuation marks. The typography must visually and conceptually continue the iJusi Magazine to “encourage and promote a visual language rooted in the African experience.” There is no limit for medium used but it needs to be suited to lithographic printing.
After compiling my field research, I decided to to base my font on African craft. I was really inspired by these sculptures and artifacts i found on this one shop and they all looked different but had one thing similar, they were all from Africa. These sculptures came from different countries here in Africa and they were all crafted with the different material like woods, ivory, ion, meta and stone, depending where each comes from.

My concepts basically is craft. I wanted to design my typeface to resemble crafted objects. I wanted the font to have depth and a form like African sculptures. African sculptures are very much valued outside of Africa and that is because of them being hand crafted and perfectly purified using simple mechanical tools. Most sculptures keep the texture of the medium used and others
have pattens for decoration purposes.
So I wanted to incoporate parttens on my font because parttens are common in almost all the african cultures.
