The Sky's the Limit

For this project I created a gig poster for a fake event. I decided to go with a more alternative genre. This fake band writes songs that are upbeat, quirky, fun and kind of cheesy. I imagined the band using a lot of puns and figures of speech in their lyrics. I didn't have a specific name for the band, but had lots of fun ideas for the poster.

These include all the sketches for the heads up idea.
I decided to go with the sketch with a guy's head in the clouds. I thought it was the most unique of the heads up ideas.

The sketching process was very different than my photorealistic watch project. Rather than find multiple ways to sketch the same object (like I did for the watch project), I used sketching for brainstorming my subject for the gig poster. I have 2 more pages of other random ideas for gig poster ideas. Creating a gig poster was fun because I got to imagine a band and an event too!

Here is my first draft...
I got some great feedback from my peers.
Round out the shape of the clouds
Change the neck to a giraffe
Make him off center
Creating better space between the armpit of his t-shirt
Expand the end of the shirt so it looks like it hangs over the pants

I was able to do all those things, and more.

Here is the final draft
I decided to name the band Skyways and figured "Heads up" could be the name of one of their songs. I actually decided the name of the band while playing with how to put the font. I was debating placing it vertically making it look sideways and "Skyways" just popped in my head!

In the end I feel like Ii was able to create a unique, quirky and fun gig poster for a potential alternative artist. Using bright colors and a giraffe neck with imperfect human features gave a lot of creative interpretation to the context of the poster. This is a poster that wouldn't make sense to a general audience, but would resonate with a band's target audience. And that is the coolest part about a gig poster.
