THE WANDERERS
For this assignment we were instructed to create an image to communicate a specific idea, feeling or story using CC licensed content based on a specific fairy or folk tale. Choosing the tale to base the design on was one of the most challenging steps as we were encouraged to choose a tale that we had no prior knowledge about. In order to make a creative design the tale required imaginative content in order for us to interpret it in many different ways and generate sketches and mood boards. “Wanderer’s” was the folk tale that I based my design on detailing the voyage that the Polynesians took when they founded New Zealand guided by the help of tohungan priest Ngatoro. In order to avoid controversy by trying to replicate the Maori culture I put a different spin on the story by making it futuristic and adventure driven incorporating numerous cultures. A combination of 10 images were used and edited to create the movie poster that you can see below.
1. The first initial trial before searching for 3D floating worlds. This image consists of a birds eye view of a boat heading towards NZ over water and surrounded by a stormy sky. Obviously this image is quite flat hence exploring further.
2. The first trial creating a 3D world, which didn’t quite go to plan. It was evident that elements needed to be removed in order to get the desired effect.
3. A snapshot of the elements that had to be edited and positioned correctly before applying a distort effect that creates a 3D world. Some elements were duplicated and placed next to each other numerous times in order to create a perfect circle.
4. This image features a 3D world (not the one featured on the final poster) that was trialled and tested with different imagery to see what worked for the desired look.
