Mien of ‘Madai is my take on the sentient Pattamadai ways. Mien, which literally means a person’s appearance or manner, has been used as a metaphor to describe the organic dimension of the village of Pattamadai. Being a complex one in its working, Pattamadai showcases emotions through its lovely skies and streets and people. It is this variety and complexity - the people, geographies, colors, and patterns - that serve as the inspiration for this project. ‘Mien of ‘Madai: A Narrative of Pattupai’ is a small tribute to the craft of the silken pai (grass mat weaving) that was born in the lap of this village, the sheer brilliance of which has made the village known worldwide.
