The Megalopolis power plant (MGPP) is a (PP) of an 850 MW nameplate capacity and it’s the third considering its capacity in Greece. The plant was built in the central Peloponnese and produces electricity for the Southern Greece as also for a great number of islands. Its electricity production become from coal and lignite mined in the broader area.

The sulphur and carbon dioxide emissions, responsible for acid rain, have been found to be 100 times over the highest permissible limit and can be seen up to 20 km away and are formed as high as 1 km. This kind of pollution is a problem in the area, as also the used coal waste which is dumped in Alfeios, the longest river in Peloponnese, as well as the Megalopoli ancient city’s marbles and stones hast started to rust.

The (MGPP) as fossil power plant produces large amounts of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change and the continual and often irreversible damage to the environment in the central Peloponnese region is no secret. However, Greece’s GDP per capita is 50% below the EU average and as a coal based country in EU has access to free carbon allowance scheme.
