ISTD —
Polish Independence Day

The ISTD is a professional body run by and for typographers, graphic designers and educators which engages with universities and institutions across the globe to raise the profile of typography in design education. The project — Polish Independence Day had received an ISTD membership of 2018.

On the November 11th, 2018, polish people celebrated 100 years of freedom. The reason why
I have chosen this particular celebration was the negative opinion on the British & Irish media about Polish Independence Day.

The Outcome:

The presented outcome is a typographic story/timeline of the struggles Poland had to get through, to get back its independence. Through my work, I wanted to familiarise foreign cultures with the Polish nation, their spirit, and individualism, how important this day is for Polish people and how they celebrate it.

Through damaged, loud typography I aimed to reflect the struggle of each fight and violent protest. This treatment will allow people to understand that behind these dates throughout the 100 years, the Polish nation was destroyed and erased off the map, but despite that, they still fought to get back its independence.

History:

After 123 years of being erased from world's map, Poland got back its independence. However, people couldn't celebrate it for long because two years later the freedom was retaken from us. Many people died and suffered to get it back. Although in 2018 we are celebrating the 100th anniversary, we weren't allowed to celebrate it publicly until 1981. This particular day is the most significant anniversary in Poland. Every year on the 11th of November, hundreds of thousands of people gather together in every city to honour everyone who sacrificed their lives, in a peaceful march.

The Material:

At the very beginning, I realised that the best format for my outcome would be a newspaper because Polish independence was first announced in local newspapers across the whole country.
I have also decided to use entirely written dates instead of numbers. I believe that each date has
a story behind it which cannot be told by repetitive numbers.
